French is the language spoken in France, and also by 4 million Belgians, 2 million Swiss and 6 million in the Canadian province of Quebec. It is also spoken in the Caribbean islands; Martinique, Guadeloupe and Haiti, the former French colonies in South America, Asia and Africa. All together, French is the official language, or one of the official languages, for 25 countries and more than forty million persons outside of France. French is also used as an international language of diplomatic exchange. Anyone with a good knowledge of both French and English can communicate with educated people in most parts of the world.
